Stergios Karavatos (Thessaloniki, Greece. 1972) is a photographer, freelance curator and educator with a multifaceted teaching experience. He studied Law at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and holds an MA in Photographic Studies from Leiden University, Netherlands. Since 2002 (with an intermission between 2008-2015) he collaborates with the Thessaloniki Museum of Photography, now part of MOMUS, mainly as production manager and in four occasions as exhibition curator. Between 2012-2019 he has coordinated the exhibition installations of the Athens Photo Festival. Since 2004 he teaches photography in private Art Academies in Thessaloniki and he has collaborated with several organizations (Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art -also now part of MOMUS, MONUMENTA, the Hellenic Centre of Photography, MA in Heritage Management, Arsis, etc) in workshops for professionals and various social groups. Since 2022 he is visiting lecturer at the MA program “Photography: research and methodology” at the University of West Attica. In his recent photographic work he documents architectural heritage and explores local histories, occasionally combining photography with other narrative elements.
